Things are looking pretty good at the moment with recent rain. Soil temperatures are 3 degrees higher than this time last year and there are predictions of a wet and warm summer.

If these predictions are true we could also have the first serious season for facial eczema in quite a while. In most seasons, it is sufficient to start zinc treatment in the water at the end of the first week of January. We generally recommend that boluses are given at the start of February. This is because they work quickly and this timing allows good protection for later in the season. Talk to us if you have any questions about facial eczema protection.

Bull management is a major focus at the moment. Remember that a fever can reduce sperm production for 8 weeks, so a sick bull is potentially out for the season. Treat lame bulls promptly.

We are busy with calf vaccinations. if your calves aren't putting on weight as fast as you think they should, give us a call. We have seen quite a few cases of coccidiosis and yersiniosis, which can hold calves back.
